March 2 2004:
One of the Queen's

St. John's

It is a quirk of our monarchy that the reigining sovereign 'owns' all the swans in England, apart from some in the hands of the ancient Vintners and Dyers Companies. Not sure if she's really that fussed about where they all are, however, although she only claims ownership of those found on certain stretches of the Thames and surrounding rivers. I spotted this one a short walk away from my house, going along the Basingstoke Canal. Best I could muster I'm afraid, as I haven't been 100% today.

Thanks, Jean, for researching the swan info for me!

Love the reflection in the water, that you captured.
Don`t tell the queen but we have them here in the States also. :-)

Did the swan turn back to look where he was going or did he swim into the wall?!

Great shot, Ray, the reflection is perfect - and you've captured it's gracefulness wonderfully.
Apparantly one of the reasons for the monarchy claiming ownership of the swan goes back to it's use as a delicacy. Commoners were banned from eating it in favour of use at royal feasts. So I was once told, anyway!
