I did not know the history behind this lion that is placed at the southern end of Westminster Bridge. It once stood on the top of the Lion Brewery nearby and was apparently quite a landmark. The brewery closed in the 1930s and that building was demolished just after the war. With support from King George VI, the lion was saved and after a short spell on the Festival of Britain site in 1951, was placed here, not far from the London Eye and on the opposite side of the river from Big Ben.
