01/09/05 Sundial by Night

Sundial Brige, Redding California

My first visit to the Sundial Bridge in Redding California.
If you are passing through or live in Northern California this is a must shoot.
Designed by Santiago Calatrava (Athens Olympic Stadium)
the bridge is a working sundial and the green glass decking
is underlit at night. It is a wonderful piece of architecture.
Upon obtaining a true wide angle lens I plan to go revisit this
bridge for both night and day shooting and will spend many frames there.
For this shot I set my camera on a planter at the beginning of the bridge,
set the timer, and let it go for 20 seconds. There are ghosts of people
walking through the frame.

Great shot Cindy! Calatrava architecture makes for intersting photographs - loads of them in the CSLR-challenges already. Would you believe it, I've been to Redding several times? During my first visit to the US (many years ago), I stayed with family in Trinity Center (population: 300-something). Nearest 'town' was Weaverville (population: 3000-something, I think). Nearest 'city' was Redding, so we went there from time to time (a long trip on windy roads). --Olaf.dk

Hi Robby. It is the bridge that is stunning. With a 24 mm on my 20d I could not even get in half of the main spike that forms the sundial. It is a beautiful curving spire. I need a fisheye I think for this baby! Cindy

Hi Dawn, I was tuned into a "West Coast Live" the other day broadcast out of the Bay Area, and the host was raving about visiting this bridge and complaining about the ugly bridge project you guys have going on down there. Not sure which one he meant, but he couldn't understand how a little city like Redding pulled this off. Well, they shot for the stars and got this big time architect (check out his website) and had a ton of funding from a private foundation. It is really an icon for the city now. Plenty of other things to do up here - "come on up"! lol. Cindy
