I'm doing much the same, though not such small apertures. I often find live view with touch screen focus and shutter produces better results but sometimes struggle to handle the camera. (If humans were meant to eat and drink while standing, they would be equipped with a third arm.)

Paul - as i have told you before - your advice is always welcome.

Right now, for my macro work I am ignoring most of what I read and am told, as I am trying to push the limits of me and my camera - handheld with no tripod, natural light, and very small aperture (f/22 - 32).

I reneged a bit for this and some other butterflies.

Good friend, I entirely disagree with you. Unsolicited Advice is the price of friendship...if a person is a friend their is, IMHO, a corresponding duty to give good, or at least considered, advice from time to time....even if unwanted, unappreciated, and could cause the end of the friendship.

This is a duty...there is of course a corresponding duty that the advice be "considered," and given humbly and in good faith.

Friendship is not free...lol

Now it is true that I give advice for a living...and today is going to be difficult for this reason...people don't have to like my opinion....but I don't and refuse to do what people blindly ask me to do.

Well....let's hop to it.

(btw there is the larger life's question...Why am I doing this at all? I have to cancel again this year another spring trip to Europe...and I'm pretty distressed over this...Duty first I guess....it is what it is)

Mr T, you, I and everyone else knows that un soliciated advice is un wanted advice and I was trying to adhere to that but I tripped up here. Paul

Traveller & Paul - Good conversation. BTW, this is uncropped.
I have tested the lens on a tripod, and it behaves quite well. The IS works well for subjects that are multiple feet away.

I am pushing it and me to the limits. My project and goal is to shoot as close as possible, natural light, and hand held; with ISO <3000. Image stacking won't work for handheld shots. Sometimes I find myself in awkward positions where I am poorly balanced, and the shake is pretty large. Hence the attempt to shoot at 1/200 sec. Slower is worse.

Even with IS on, when I am only 12-13 inches from my subject I can't always handhold without small shake that the IS has trouble with. I even shoot in AISERVO to help compensate for shake to and away from the target. I believe it helps.
I "cheated" on this one, as I used a flash; so it minimized the effect of camera shake. I was inside a building with poor (by outside standards) light.

At a distance of about 13 inches, my DOF is 0.2 inches; not much.
I find that I am improving on these the more I try them.
I will continue to shoot at the lens minimum distance of ~12 in, and see if I can find better ways to stabilize myself.

Why not, Paul? Seriously, your advice is always good...or interesting...or something, but always...Paul(ish)....grin. Traveller

Now your starting to get it, nailed this one. I have to agree with somehwat with Trav with the IQ of your macro lens because the images weren’t looking right. I couldn’t put my finger on the exact nature of the problem but something was off. I almost felt that there might have been a problem with the IS feature of the lens since several of your images looked like camera shake when it shouldn’t have had it. Unless....were you trying to focus stack, if so stacking is challenging, very challenging to get right. Personally I tend to not stop down as far, pull back a bit and then crop in post to give more DOF. And there I go again offering un solicited advice that I promised I wouldn’t do any more. Paul

Very Nice! I have been a little worried about the EF 100 maybe having a little front or back focus...but the truth probably is that is has about the shallowest DOF in the world...lol...and something that has to be constantly minded.

But this is fine.

Best Wishes, Traveller
