I'm not specialist on choir techniques, but I believe they were all singing a single note, perhaps an "A-441", to synchronize their pitch, not sure about the role of their palms, though - all what I know is that the choirmaster wanted them to do it, and they were humming softly seemingly the same note (unfortunately, I do not have absolute ear, so can't tell what note exactly)
