Cobh, County Cork

Statue of Annie Moore and her brothers. Annie Moore was the first person to be admitted to the
United States through the new immigration centre at Ellis Island, New York, on 1st January 1892.
Between 1848 and 1950, almost 6 million people emigrated from Ireland, 2˝ million of them from Cobh.
Cobh also played a part in the transportation of convicts; between 1791 and 1853, 40,000 convicts
were sent to Australian penal colonies in notorious “coffin ships”.

We can only imagine the difficulties of such a life as theirs. Neat statue and shot.

Undoubtedly she was seeking a better life for her and her children. I believe life in parts of Ireland was very difficult during that period. Too bad the Irish immigrants were treated as social outcasts in so many parts of North America.
