Glendalough, one of Ireland’s most atmospheric monastic sites. Established by St Kevin in the 6th
century, it was sacked many times by the Vikings but flourished for over 600 years, until it was
partly destroyed by the English in 1398. It continued to function as a monastic centre until the
Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539. Most of the buildings date from the 8th to the 12th centuries,
but were restored during the 1870s.
