The Uffizi, built in 1560-80 as a suite of offices for Duke Cosimo I, designed by the architect
Vasari, who used iron reinforcement to create a nearly continuous wall of glass on the upper story.
It has been used since 1581 as a well-lit space to display the Medici family's art treasures,
thus creating what is probably the oldest art gallery in the world
