Sac Spider

Melbourne, Australia

on rose Just Joey

Cheiracanthium gilvum is a beige coloured Sac spider with a dark stripe down its back.
It forms a retreat by curling green leaves into a tube.

Size: body length: female 10mm, male 5mm

Bite is venomous and can cause mild illness.
More specifically, the bite of Cheiracanthium presents as two spots, 4-8mm apart,
where the fangs penetrated the skin and are yellow-green, the colour of the venom.
After 4-8 hours, mild inflammation, swelling and pain develop.

Now I understand some strange insect bites! It were bites from the Sac Spider!

Nicely composed shot Mieke and thanks for your elaborate advise about these innocent looking creatures, I'll be more careful. V.
