22 Waiting for the worms

Melbourne, Australia

Waiting for the worms to come.
(Waters)

This is a picture I took from the giant Gippsland earthworm, Megascolides australis, in a jar
on aqua fortis at the Wildlife Wonderland at Bass as described by Bill Bryson in his book "Downunder"
The Giant earthworms average at 100 cm long and 2 cm in diameter and can reach 3 m in length.
They have a dark purple head and a blue-grey body.
The earthworms are now a threatened and protected species.

other sizes: small medium large original auto

Very interesting. I read about these before I came to Australia 40+ years ago, but have never seen one.

Fascinating a 3m long earthworm. Had no idea they existed. It does look pretty dramatic in that jar. Reminds me of pigs feet they used to have in taverns in Germany, and no, I never had any.

When do we get protection...everything else seems to have it?

yikes... what the hell you are doing with this worm in a jar...
In this area here, they capture vipers and put them in alcohol. They drink it to prevent flu... apparently, it works...espiacially if you believe it!

I have heard of these worms before! How fascinating. I suppose this one is dead and preserved in the jar?
