16 Choko

Melbourne, Australia

The choko (Sechium edule), also known as chayote or chow-chow,
is an edible plant that belongs to the gourd family Cucurbitaceae along with melons, cucumbers and squash.

Whether raw or cooked, choko is a good source of amino acids and vitamin C.

It has a very mild flavour by itself, and is commonly served with seasonings
(e.g., salt, butter and pepper in Australia) or in a dish with other vegetables and/or flavourings.

Haven't ever seen these or tried them. I'm going to look for them here. I love to try new things. Great image of them. Love their unusual shapes and the color. Great display!

Nice shot with these details. These are known as chayote here. These are great in stews, or you can steam them and eat hem with butter and lime.

In Louisiana we call them Mirlitons (Mirliton). We scoop out the inside and cook it with shrimp, crab or ground meat then stuff the shells and bake. They are a great holiday dish and considered a delicacy although they grow almost wild.

Peel & poach as you would pears...add sugar to a small amount of water...serve with custard & cream as a desert.
