10 Witlof

Melbourne, Australia

Witlof means, "white leaf", for the reason of its appearance.
It is grown on the roots of the chicory in the dark.
It has a bitter taste.

I like to eat it with white wine/cheese sauce and capers.
And of course I add some sour cream.

Witlof is a common vegetable in the Netherlands.
I only know one shop in Melbourne were I can buy it.

Prachtig.
Ik houd ook van witlof:
With ham and cheese
Or in a salade with appel and red beet

Whitlof, chicory in the UK, endive in Canada, the US, and France. Great in salads too.

An aquired taste, I believe. They are grown here in NZ by an expat Belgian and mostly exported.

Are they also called chicoree? I like them baked in the oven with some onions and butter, also some white wine so they don´t get grey the should stay white, they have a bitter tast, but i like that.
