Jacques-Louis David "Coronation of Napoleon" - detail - 1807.jpg

This detail of the enormous painting of Napoleon actually crowning the Empress Josephine, was made by Jacques-Louis David, Napoleon's court painter, between 1804 and 1807.
The enormous painting, (almost 20 x 30 feet) of which this is only a detail of the central part, depicts the coronation of Napoleon and Josephine at the Cathedral of Notre- Dame in 1804.
The painting is supposed to have over 100 figures, I never counted them ! Those shown here in the central portion are "small life-size".
There is an almost exact copy of the painting by David at Versailles, which was put there after this image was moved to the Louvre.

Fascinating to see how the artist captures the light in this painting.
