Paris May 2009

On a rercent ten day trip to Paris, I enjoyed photographing in most of the museums, shooting people reacting to works of art and catching people on the streets. I only travel with one lens on trips, in this case my Canon 24-105 L IS on my Canon 50D. For backup I had my little Pro 1, and a couple of images on this gallery were shot with that camera. Carolyn, I was doing pretty well just taking care of home projects and foregoing travel for a couple of years until you posted these lovely images of Paris. Ever since I got the 5D three years ago I have been yearning to return to Paris and rephoto some of the shots that meant so much in years past with P&S cameras. You have rekindled the passion that burns in my heart for that wonderful city. The museums are always a challenge and you have mastered the "art". I have seen your posts on dpreview over the years and they have always helped me be a better photographer. Thank you for sharing this gallery with us. Don Finch

As I also replied to your post in dpreview forum, eventhough 24-105 is a great lens, I find it a bit too long for city or building, interior shots. I am sure you tried to get some pictures of some of beautiful ceilings of Louvre Museum, with some paintings on them, you simply cant do it since 24-105 is not wide enough with a crop frame. I also see that many of your shots taken interior has a very limited field of view due to lens. I had the same issues since I also made a trip to Paris last December and my gear was almost similar to yours (XSI with 24-105 single lens). Or I dont know whether you tried to take a picture of Eiffel Tower while positioned just under its legs. I still regret of not getting 10-22, 17-55 or a lens wider than 24-105 on my camera. By the way, a nice gallery, beautiful shots, well done.

Thanks so much for the photos and your comments, Carolyn! Very interesting. I did the same visit to Paris when I was 17, in 1975. It was great then, I wish digital photography was invented in those days, I only got one photo from me in Paris. I think it was from that trip, I made up my mind and went to art schooL. I think the EF-S 17-55 is a better lens on your camera for visiting musea.

Dear Mrs Hammett, What a beautiful city! Your pictures invite me to jump on the Thalys immediately. I read your main intrest is renaissance art. Have you ever visited the Musée national de la Renaissance in Ecouen, at 20 km to the north of Paris? You can get there by public transport from the North station. It is the pendant, for renaissance art, of the Musée de Cluny. There is a marvellous website about it, unfortunately not in English: www.musee-renaissance.fr Thank you for sharing! Wow, Carolyn. Thanks for sharing your stroll through the museums of Paris. When I visited, the museum workers were on strike and all the museums were closed. So we actually were not able to go into the Louvre, or any of the other musuems. We drove into the courtyard of the Louvre one morning and made a quick stop, and that was it. We really felt cheated but it now gives us a perfect excuse to return to Paris. I enjoyed your perspective on the art and the way you photographed people admiring it. It truly made for an interesting as well as educational exercise as I read all your commentary. Makes me feel like I made up for some of what I missed by not being able to visit these museums myself (yet). I always enjoyed this kind of study when I was a kid in school, and I especially enjoyed the different architecture through the ages. Sitting in a high school Humanities class many years ago, I remember a teacher who used to bring in his personal photos similar to these to show the students. You remind me of him in that way, and this always made the class so much more interesting than seeing the stuff in a textbook alone. It also brought many more questions from the students and made for a very interesting experience. I have been fortunate now to visit many places around the world and see some extraordinary architecture up close, and I plan to continue that into the future. There are many places still on my list, and re-visiting France and especially Paris is near the top. You have put together a great photo gallery here. Since I cannot tip the tour guide, you got a pbase vote from me instead.
