This detail of the enormous painting of Napoleon actually crowning the Empress Josephine, was made by Jacques-Louis David, Napoleon's court painter, between 1804 and 1807.
The enormous painting, (almost 20 x 30 feet) of which this is only a detail of the central part, depicts the coronation of Napoleon and Josephine at the Cathedral of Notre- Dame in 1804.
The painting is supposed to have over 100 figures, I never counted them ! Those shown here in the central portion are "small life-size".
There is an almost exact copy of the painting by David at Versailles,which was put there after this image was moved to the Louvre.
