Legally hunted during Duck Hunting Season, the Pukeko somewhat resembles the extremely rare and endangered Takahe http://www.pbase.com/britestar/image/112613456

In fact, mistaken for a common Pukeko, one Takahe was tragedically shot & killed by a hunter. With a World Wide disappearing population of only about 200 Takahes, the loss of even that one makes a difference.
