Lost in Venice

In Venice, which I noticed on my trip, one has to be alone. When I was there alone at last,
I was deeply melancholic and yet infinitely happy. I felt fragile, vulnerable, I got lost and lost and put back together again at the end.
It was similar to me, as Hermann Hesse in his poem "Arrival in Venice" describes:

You silently darker channel,
Abandoned Bay,
Ancient houses gray escape,
Gothic windows and Moorish
ornamented portal!
From a deep dream defeated,
Lulled by the death
Asleep at the time here
And all life seems so far, so far!
Here I wish all alone
Through old streets go,
In torchlight
At gondola stairs stand,
In window blind see,
Bang-happy as a child in
the dark.

Excellent! I sometimes think that Venice was the only society that discovered GPS before the invention of the wheel. You only have to go a few hundred metres to be totally lost in Venice - the world's most beautiful city.

An ingenious, creative and highly evocative gallery, encapsulating Hesse's words perfectly. I love this gallery. Too often we see photos of Venice in full light and brightness, which are lovely, but I am drawn to these moody beautiful shots. VV

Beautiful gallery. I was there in December 2013. Very foggy. The city takes on a different eerie feel in the fog but still a wonderful place to be.
