7th - "The Other Landscape"

Cleeve Hill Common, Glos. view map

(Neil M. Gunn's last full novel, published in 1954, and a wonderful exploration of metaphysical anguish in the Scottish Highlands)

Sorry, I was house-bound yesterday as the snow storms hit Gloucestershire - no chance to get out other than round the garden, so this is a photo from my recent walk up on Cleeve Hill. The hill forms part of the Cotswold escarpment, a steep slope which rises from the floor of the Severn Vale to the relatively flat plateau of the Common. Despite it being a beautifully clear day on the Common itself, when I was walking along the edge, soft tendrils of mist and low cloud were being blown up the escarpment and through the whin bushes at the top, making them disappear and reappear disconcertingly. As well as that, the silence was deafening - this part of the walk was quite literally like moving through an alien and other-worldly place.

Nothing much done to this shot - opened into Camera Raw, Clarity increased a touch and a light Tone Curve added. Into CS3, I desaturated it via two B&W Adjustment layers, a light touch one for the top of the bushes and sky, the second more aggressive for the lower half. I also added Smart Sharpen to the bottom half. Images was flattened and then good old Dodge & Burn was used on the highlights and dark features. Almost last, a Diffuse Glow was added for emphasis of the highlights...then resized for the web

As with yesterday, grateful for all critiques :o)

Stunning winter image. Evokes a very bleak day.

I love this misty, winter scene.

Having come back to this I agree with Phillip, a more pano crop will certainly be a stronger comp.

like the vague horizon in the image

Ah nothing like a bit of mist to add to the mood! Hope the weather is improving!
Cindi Smith08-Jan-2010 02:32

You captured the bleak desolation. This is not just a pretty snow scene.

Like the softness

This is a scene I'd love to be in. I can "hear" the silence and it calls to me. I actually love the three tonal layers you've got going on here, too. Beautiful shot, Doug.

Mmmmm - lovely misty moody frosty crisp morning mood here! Makes me want my poddidge :o)
If it were me, I'd lose some of the sky and crop it panoramic, just slightly below the top of the highest bits of bushy stuff: over that the sky doesn't have anything to say to me - and being the brightest part of the piccy it tends to draw the eye away from that lovely wispy mistyness at the end of the path :o)

Wonderful mood with superb toning! ... good lead with a little atmospheric fog or dew ... very nice! ... V

Looks like a mayor path going to Scotland :)!
Steve Sharp07-Jan-2010 13:57
You've got the bleak stark subtle beauty of winter at its best encapsulated in this one Doug!
Maaike Huizer07-Jan-2010 13:31
You've captured the mood so well. And the perspective is great. I agree with Peter: the path seems to end quite suddenly, but IMO it adds to the mood.
Guest 07-Jan-2010 13:24
but beautiful, saw it on t.v the bad weather in the Uk.
Guest 07-Jan-2010 11:18
Very good shot, well done Doug!
Stephanie07-Jan-2010 11:06
Still looks cold in merry old England!
Bernard Davis07-Jan-2010 10:47
like the path into the distance, and just over the brow of the hill, and of course, a bit of mist always looks good. Nice one.

It has a lovely early morning feel to it.. nice floaty image, with a very dreamy feel, almost Tolkeinesque. I am impressed by your post-processing..
Guest 07-Jan-2010 09:29
My eye hits the path, and instantly moves upwards though the image, it seems the fence/plants come across and the path abruptly ends which stops the flow of the eye over the image, and leaves me a bit lost - this might have been the plan?
Kathryn07-Jan-2010 09:09
You captured a very cold and frosty morning, brrrr.
Ann...07-Jan-2010 08:39
Is this the bit where you round the bend and come face to face with…………..??

You have captured the mood very well
Kevin Chester07-Jan-2010 08:11
A well troden path I think.
