Wildrose Charcoal Kilns

Wildrose Canyon, Death Valley National Park

About a dozen of these kilns were built in 1876 to supply charcoal for smelting silver ore from the Modoc Mine in Panamint Valley.
Piñon pines from the surrounding forest were cut to make the charcoal. The kilns have been beautifully restored by the Park Service.
