The Racetrack is the Holy Grail for photographers in Death Valley. In addition to the fascination the moving rocks hold for them, sucessfully negotiating the
twenty-seven miles of very rough, washboarded dirt road to the site is a major accomplishment in and of itself. Relatively few visitors can claim this distinction.
The rocks on the Racetrack Playa (dry lake bed) leave tracks in the mud as they move. Although the phenomenon has no proven explanation, the leading theory
is that during heavy rainstorms, strong winds push the rocks over the slippery, wet mud. A few believe that the moving rocks are a mind game played by alien beings.
