Antoon and Marie’s birthdays were only 16 days apart, so after Antoon’s 39th anniversary on 13th January 1931, it was another get together on Thursday 29th when the young mother became 29.
Both sides of the family found their way to 79 Oranje Street in Arnhem, luckily no one did have to cross the river Rhine that day, as the floating bridge was out of action, being damaged earlier by a heavy loaded, deep-set barge.
The skipper had lost control and rammed the bridge due to the high water level and a very strong current.
