Not in the best of moods our aunt Truus? Unusual we known her as a jolly aunt.
Grandma Anna with her daughter Geertruida, better known under the name of Truus, who seemed unfortunately not in the best of moods, looking at her face. Her niece Annie was able to tell that us that Truus had been in love (and engaged?) with a young man from the Lombok neighbourhood in Arnhem, but he apparently died of tuberculoses.
Later she met Dirk van Leeuwen in her younger brother Antoon’s tobacco and hairdressing shop in Oranjestreet in West Arnhem (Lombok).
The story goes that Truus was not so happy with her future husband Dirk.
She called him affectionately Dé-tje, only because his first name started with a D, but she did not wanted everybody to be on first name basis with him.
It annoyed her that people, male or female, who came into his bicycle shop in Hommel Street addressed the jovial man with the familiar ‘jij’ instead of the more distant and polite ‘U’, as it’s the custom in dealings with each other at that time in The Netherlands
