Dr. John Tyler, known as the first American ophthalmologist to successfully perform cataract removal, placed an iron statue of his beloved and faithful dog, GUESS, in front of his house.
In 1862 Confederate troops moving through the town removed GUESS with the possible intention of melting him down into bullets.
GUESS was found intact on a field near Antietam Battlefield a short time after that battle was fought. He was returned to his owner's home where he still sits watchfully today.
