A visit to Harpers Ferry is a truly unique experience. This is what NPS says about it: "... Harpers Ferry witnessed the first successful application of interchangeable manufacture, the arrival of the first successful American railroad, John Brown's attack on slavery, the largest surrender of Federal troops during the Civil War, and the education of former slaves in one of the earliest integrated schools in the United States...."
Stroll the steep streets and drop in on the Civil War-era Provost Marshal who will give you a pass to be in the city. Cross the bridge and find the C & O Canal and lockhouse running right along the Appalachian Trail. Lots of hikers and bikers here.
This is where the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers meet and it's a beautiful sight.
Most of the town is designated a historical park and taking the NPS bus into the town is an easy way to visit.
