On this day I found the Moulin Rouge enclosed with fencing with a guard posted. He wouldn't let me come through the gate in order to take a photo. But he didn't mind if I shot photos through the fence.
Here's the importance of this building: It's the first integrated hotel and casino in Las Vegas. This was a time in our history when only Whites were allowed to be in the casinos.
It is celebrated as a landmark of racial integration in Las Vegas. It opened in May 1955 and despite its popularity it closed in October 1955. Part of it has been destroyed by arson and it appears some kind of restoration is under way.
The iconic sign was designed by Betty Willis, creator of the famous "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign.
