After a strenous and steep 1.5 mile hike up to the cave, we went on a tour led by a ranger through the narrow and dark pathways. It was sure worth the hike up, but if you have any health issues with your heart, breathing, bad knees or hips, and are afraid of heights, you might want to pass on this one. The elevation at the top was bout 6300 ft.
It covers about an acre and is actually 3 limestone caverns connected .While it's a living and growing cave, it's only about 200,000 years old.
The first of the caves was found in 1887 and the 3rd one in 1914. It was declared a national monument in 1922.
