The Historic Y

738 N. Fifth Ave.

The building, designed by Tucson architect, Annie Rockfellow, opened in 1930 as home for the YWCA, which started in Tucson in 1917. Jane Addams (1890-1935), founder of Hull House, was on hand to break the ground for this building.
Next year the YWCA will be moving into their new facility downtown.
This historic building will continue to be home to various organizations.

I moved to Tucson in 1973 when I was 19 years old, and stayed at the YWCA for the first month I was in town. It was a nice, clean, safe room, affordable, and convenient to 4th Avenue, where I spent a lot of time at Gayatri and shopped at the food co-op. The Y had a nice courtyard right outside the rooms. In the first week I was in town, I ran into an old friend from home on 4th Avenue. I loved living in Tucson and have returned to visit a couple of times since I moved away -- it is much changed from my early residence there.
