Located in Victor, long known as the "City of Mines", is the famous Battle Mountain. Remains of two old gold mines, the Independence and the Portland, are visible in this photo. The Independence was located in 1891 and sold for $11,000,000 in 1899.
Over 500 mines produced over 21,000,000 ounces of gold, exceeding the combined total of the California and Alaska Gold Rushes.
Colorado's largest gold mine is still operating in Victor.
