Roy Place Building

This 1929 "gem of a building" was designed by Tucson architect Roy Place and is currently vacant.
It's hoped that it will be restored to its former grand appearance before it was remodeled to house Tucson's downtown Walgreen's.

"...$800,000 is earmarked for the restoration of the exterior façade of the Roy Place Building to its original Spanish Colonial Revival style, which was similar to the design of the 1929 Pima County Courthouse. The County is looking for a commercial tenant to replace Walgreens..." Downtown Tucsonan May 2004

I work across the street from this building. I am happy to say that it is in fact in the process of being restored. The corner and front (facing Stone Avenue) is complete and only the portion that stretches down Pennington remains to be restored. It looks great.

If you go back even further, late 1800's, this corner held the rectory (home) for the bishop of the Methodist church that once stood approximately where Cele Peterson's shop (now City High School/Voices) is now.

I mis-typed. David Holmes, the architect whose office was once on the site of the Walgreens building, did the Old Pueblo Club, not the Owl's Club, and J. Knox Corbett house.

The restoration will begin soon, according to an architect friend of mine. Can't wait to see it when it's finished. David Holmes, the architect of the Owls Club and the Corbett home, had his office in a building that was on this site previously. It must have been torn down when the Walgreen's building went up.

Instead: After Walgreens moved out (I photographed the "sneakout" taking place on a Saturday morning), offices were put in place. A recent survey found out that one reason folks don't come downtown is the absence of any interesting retail activities. Yet those same retail facilities died off as people stopped coming downtown, making me question if this survey was asking the right questions. No attempt of any kind has been made to rework the building.
