Clitheroe Castle

Clitheroe Castle is a motte and bailey structure, dated to the 12th century. The keep, that you see here is one of the smallest in England. It was built to protect the cross-pennine trade routes by Robert de Lacy and is now owned and maintained by Lancashire County Council, having been bought by the people of Clitheroe after the First World War to stand as a memorial to their fallen sons.

A fine memorial it is too. How inventive of them to use an existing object rather than create a new one.

...and there's the "new" flying past! Wonderful old 'keep' and story.

LOL@Steph! Good shot, I like the diagonal of the contrail, it forms a good-looking triangle with the flag and flag-pole

It's not fair that you have OLD castles and we don't.
Terrific juxta shot Bernard! :-))
