Memories

The inscription reads:
"In affectionate remembrance of William Kirkham of Penwortham who was killed on the North Union Railway Dec 6th 1868, aged 36 years.
Also 3 children of the above William and Ellen Kirkham.
Elizabeth, died March 9th 1870, aged 10 years.
Mary Ellen, died July 30th. 1871, aged 2 years.
Jane, died Jan. 1st 1872 aged 14 years.
Also Ellen, wife of the above named William Kirkham who died April 24th. 1880, aged 46 years."

Those were hard times, only 150 years ago.
This churchyard borders on to my garden, I visit it fairly regularly and always come away feeling just a little sad - so many gravestones have lists of children who died in infancy for the same couples.

I was actually married in St. Mary's and have some more photographs of the church here.

A beautiful shot. I often visit cemeteries and yes, you're right it was not that long ago that many children died at young age.

Some sad stories from those years... always so many children amongst the dead.

What a tragedy, losing a husband and then 3 children is quick succession.

Carved in stone to remember, but tragic here, feel sorry!

While wandering through an old prarie cemetary I noticed many many graves of children who all died around the same time. No doubt it was influenza.

yes.. it is sad to think of the lives and the losses the young families endured..

It is sad to go thru old cemeteries and see all the children in there. So many died from everyday stuff we have medicine for. I don't know how the families dealt with losing their children. I don't think I could have gone through what they did.

Me too...sights like these make me think of the hardship & sadness that would have fallen on that young wife after losing her family. Just 4 years before this date the little village where I live was opened to free settlement, there are many such graves here too of those who came from other lands & died without seeing their families back home, ever again.

I know exactly what you mean Bernard - I do the same thing in the churchyards I visit here and always come away somewhat humbled and thankful for what I've got. Good shot for 'memories'

Wow, the poor mother losing her husband at such a young age then her children so close afterwards. Wonderful gravestone image and good find for memories.

I love old cemeteries. Many children and infants died back then. Very sad...

Tragic memories of this whole family that passed away so young. My parents live next to a cemetery in Germany, so I understand your feeling, having walked through the cemetery many times.
