The inscription reads:
"In affectionate remembrance of William Kirkham of Penwortham who was killed on the North Union Railway Dec 6th 1868, aged 36 years.
Also 3 children of the above William and Ellen Kirkham.
Elizabeth, died March 9th 1870, aged 10 years.
Mary Ellen, died July 30th. 1871, aged 2 years.
Jane, died Jan. 1st 1872 aged 14 years.
Also Ellen, wife of the above named William Kirkham who died April 24th. 1880, aged 46 years."
Those were hard times, only 150 years ago.
This churchyard borders on to my garden, I visit it fairly regularly and always come away feeling just a little sad - so many gravestones have lists of children who died in infancy for the same couples.
I was actually married in St. Mary's and have some more photographs of the church here.
