NGC253

Nerriga, NSW

This is a lovely large barred spiral galaxy about 10 million light-years away in Sculptor. It is about as wide in the sky as the full Moon. The galaxy is not too far from edge-on, and so the bar and main arms form a narrow flattened 'Z' of brighter regions. It's pretty bright and close as galaxies go, and it's a starburst galaxy, with lots of dust and rapid star formation. Many of the little bright specks and patches are large star clouds, clusters, globular clusters and nebulae in this faraway galaxy. There is so much energy that there are streamers of dark dust flowing away from the plane of the galaxy.
