Though commissioned, the sculpture was snuck into the church at night quietly, lest it cause a
stir, and it's said young Michelangelo sometimes entered to hear reactions and heard two people
claiming that another sculptor had created the Pieta. So he went back by night and chiseled
his signature on the banner.
