Many were using small cameras and videocams, mostly not noticed by the guards.
You could do this with people behind you blocking the view.
I later asked the guards why, officially, even NON-flash photos were
discouraged after the restoration of David (from hundreds of years of grit,
as it had been outside for a long time too).
They thought it could be concern that people would use flash accidentally.
