The Foxtrot Class Boats have a total of three toilets or heads for 78 men. To linger in the head was tantamount to a crime.
The boat also had one shower. Water had to be used sparingly. The boat had no way of generating fresh water and had to rely on the 36 tons of water stored aboard.
On a 70 day patrol water shortages made showers rare and life uncomfortable. The crew had throw-away underclothing and were given a hot wet cloth by the doctor every morning.
