110127_210403_14721 Finding The Cool (Thu 27 Jan)

Sydney, NSW

Oh dear. This did not at all turn out as anticipated but I don't have a backup shot so it's either this, or miss a day.

This evening was late night shopping again, and I did briefly consider going to the Fletcher Jones city store which is now closing down, and which is where I have bought almost all of my non-suit trousers for the last 20 or more years. However I had other priorities, so that had to wait.

This summer hasn't been as bad as some but it has been hot enough, and I'm tired of restless, overheated attempts to sleep. I therefore went on a prowl around some department stores in a nearby suburb checking out portable air conditioners (sadly, impractical with my windows) and evaporative air coolers (more promising, if far less effective).

I thought that a good shot to commemorate this would be a shot of a couple of ice cubes under flash. I had visions of interesting plays of light through the crystalline structures of the ice. Instead I got a limit on how fast I could make the exposure and a histogram that looked more like a nightmare.

It's a subject that I'll come back to at some point, but more likely when I have time to properly experiment with it, and on a day when the rugged ice cubes don't turn into a rounded blob within 5 minutes of being put on the plate. I'm therefore posting this late in the hope that few people ever get to see it.
