Royal 35-S

Charleston SC

One of 'the jewels in the crown' for my Royal Camera Co. Japan collection.
c1955 early model Royal 35-S, which is (as far as I know) from the
first year or so of production of 35mm rangefinders from Royal Camera Co.
There are some similarities to the early Canon Nikon, Contax and Leica rangefinders, of course !

More cameras by Royal Camera Co. Japan

Finding this camera in Thessaloniki, Greece, and acquiring it from a collector
there, adds a nice richness to the more common Royals and Royal clones.
(All of this, because I discovered my Hanimex C-35 was made by Royal Camera Co. (Daiou Shashin Kōgaku))

A couple of things I have noticed with this particular camera:
Only the S model seems to have a 50mm lens - the later versions and clones reverted to 45mm - all by Tomioka.
And, I have seen a picture of this model 35-S elsewhere, with the film counter beside the accessory shoe, and the rewind button 'blank'.

Still looking for the Ogikon 35E, Mansfield Skylark E and V, and the Torca 35 - all 'branded' clones of the Royal rangefinder cameras.

Does this camera use interchangeable lens and if yes, what is the attachment unit: bayonet or screw?
Thank you Colin and kind regards from Switzerland.

Congratulations, really glad this one found its best home!!

Do have a few questions... Does the serial number start with a '5'? (Wondered if the total production of Royals was sequential from the beginning, if all models' serial numbers were all in the 5xxxx and 6xxxx ranges this might be a hint. The rebadges would have their own ranges...)

And, Sugiyama/Naoi indicates that this first model had interchangable lenses. Without forcing anything have you checked to see if the lens unscrews/bayonets? As you know there was a later model with a different 50mm/f2.0 lens.

(And could you post a photo and your findings over at Camerapedia under Royal 35-S?? Thanks!)

Not bad at all. I did not know this camera but I like its large viewer. Unfortunately, it seems that the leather on the right side of the camera is not the original one! Nevertheless, the camera is like new! Congratulations Colin.
Cheers.
