The Universal Waif.
Confused. Bemused.
Frightened. Alone. Vulnerable.
Nikon F Photomic, Nikkor-S 1.4/50, Kodak Tri-X
Tech Note: The negative (developed in dirty, warm D76) is ruined through
lack of proper fixing, and fungus. This old print, made in 1968,
survives. Most of the images made in that era were developed quickly,
and often printed when the negs were still wet - especially 'recon' and 'reportage'. full exif
I don't know how I missed this fantastic and poignant shot on my earlier visits to this gallery. This shot speaks a thousand words and takes me back there. The little guy with barbed wire in his backyard says it all.
This picture is of worldclass level. If it would had been done by a known pro photographer it would go round the world as one of his representive images.
This is then even more priceless
and the little leaves look like butterflies
to keep company to this precious little boy...
who is now in his 40's
I wonder how he would react looking at this amazing touching portrait
after so many years. I am sure he would have a lot to say...

ABSOLUTELY STUNNING, Colin. Love the contrast of the tenderness of the little boy and the wire... love your words too, totally portrayed in this image. Huuuuuuuuge vote!
Most amazing picture I've ever seen. Agree with AnnLT. Not "ruined" at all. This image should be in National Geo for its historic story. Treasure this picture, Colin, the most classic timeless image.
Wonderful....wonderful, dear Colin.
Thanks for the tech info. Definitely not "ruined."
There's a history to this image that makes it even more remarkable.
