This hole in the ground is in preparation for a large new building about to go up. The date on the slide is Feb. '82. That's the Civic Auditorium on the right. The spot had been previously occupied by the Sailors Union of the Pacific hiring hall. What was interesting was the night-time activity after the workers had gone home. There was a handful of amateur archeologists digging away, extracting bottles and other artifacts from old Portland. They told me that whenever there was a foundation being dug for a new building they'd be there all night with pick and shovel digging up what they could. Usually they knew from old records what had been on the spot where they were looking.
