The riders in this "Tuesday night race" are wearing hard-shell helmets, but effective hard shells are still a few years away. The Skid Lid, worn by the guy in the green jersey, was proven to be essentially worthless in protecting the head. In 1982 nearly all bikes were steel. Skid-lid dude is riding a Merz, a frame by local builder Jim Merz. The first mountain bikes had appeared by were still exotic and strange. Same for recumbents. Cycling was about to explode into the American consciousness.
