James Mason | all galleries >> Cycling in Portland, Oregon > Skid-Lid
previous | next

The riders in this "Tuesday night race" are wearing hard-shell helmets, but effective hard shells are still a few years away. The Skid Lid, worn by the guy in the green jersey, was proven to be essentially worthless in protecting the head. In 1982 nearly all bikes were steel. Skid-lid dude is riding a Merz, a frame by local builder Jim Merz. The first mountain bikes had appeared by were still exotic and strange. Same for recumbents. Cycling was about to explode into the American consciousness.

That's me in the yellow and blue with the white helmet. The guy in the lead doesn't look remotely like Glenn Sanders. Um ... IMHO.

That can't be Glen. The frame is too big. He is the same size as me and I could not ride a bike with that much head tube.

I believe that's Glen Sanders in front of Martin.

Martin Strand.

Actually, Martin.....can't remember his last name. A ski instructor in his mid twenties, as I recall. And the year is probably 1978.
