1958 Mercury Park Lane Phaeton Hardtop Sedan. The Park Lane was Mercury's new top of the line and most luxurious series in 1958. This beautifully restored Pheaton sedan in Ken's photograph sold for $ 3,944. Only the Park Lane Convertible was more expensive at $ 4,118. 5,241 Phaeton sedans found owners in 1958. All medium price cars suffered major sales losses in 1958 due to a recession, and people sought out smaller, more economical and inexpensive models instead of massive, heavy high horsepower cars like this Mercury. '58 Park Lanes came standard with a large displacement 430 cubic inch V-8 engine rated at 360 horsepower that got about 8-10 miles per gallon of gas on a good day. American Motors reaped the benefits with their economical, inexpensive, smaller on the outside, but spacious and comfortable on the inside, Ramblers, jumping from 11th in the Industry to sixth in one year, and the only car manufacturer to enjoy an increase in sales in model year 1958.
