1957 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser Two Door Hardtop featuring close-up of frontal area including hood, grille, headlamps and grille. Note the hooded headlamp treatment and heavy use of chrome around the dual headlamps, the first time dual headlamps appeared on a Mercury. Note the fine verticle bars extending from headlamp to headlamp in a chrome concave housing. Centered just below the grille between massive chrome bumpers was a large gold-plated stylized block letter "M". Mercury advertising in 1956 & 1957 oftened referred to the Mercury as "The Big M". These "Dream Car Design" Mercurys were seen in millions of homes across America in commercial spots on Sunday's popular television show, "The Ed Sullivan Show". A 1957 Mercury Convertible paced the Indianapolis 500 on Memorial Day in 1957. Note the hood ornament and "Mercury" spelled out in block letters across the front section of the hood. Mercurys of this era were big massive chrome laden cars and had every "space age" gadget and gimmick imaginable. Turnpike Cruisers are a favorite of Collectors today for that reason, but at the time they were new, all that gadgetry and chrome, coupled with the Turnpike Cruisers' steep asking price, didn't go over well with the car-buying public, and Mercury, who had just come off of two consecutive and very successful sales years, saw sales tumble.
