The busy, modern capital of Tochigi-ken, one of Japan's eight landlocked prefectures, Utsunomiya is a major industrial and commercial center along the Tōhoku Shinkansen heading north from Tōkyō. Though not a traditional tourist center, the city has recently begun to gain recognition for its cocktail bars and local culinary speciality: gyōza (Chinese-style dumplings). The former castle was partially reconstructed in 2007, although its appearance is surprisingly different from most other feudal-era fortresses in the country.
