Death of the turkey burger

I was a little dismayed when I drove by the other day and saw that the Turkey Burger was closed and the building is for sale. It is not that I was a frequent customer, rather it is the realization that, just as the big box stores have homogenized our shopping experience, a handful of corporate food providers have homogenized our eating experience. There is still considerable variety at the high cost end of the industry but for a quick lunch on the road the choices are becoming limited and surprisingly similar. In fact, many of these small communities no longer have a local restaurant and you now must drive to the nearest large community so that you can eat at MacDonald's or Wendy's which is not the same experience as a Turkey Burger.

Thanks for sharing your photos. Good news about the Turkey Burger! It reopened this spring (2011).

Wow! I thought I was the only one who noticed this trend! I have laid my Homogenized America rap on people over the years and even used in as part of an argument to make a point in a essay! I experience that very thing you are talking about here! Some greasy spoons and flip joints should close, they only survive because they are the only game in town. On the other hand, there are a lot of Mom and Pop joints that deserve to prosper and the food they put out can be very good! Yet they fail because people will drive on by to get to the new KFC / Taco Bell down at the new Texaco station or the McDonalds at the new WalMart. So next time you are driving through some small town! Stop and see Mom and Pop. Mom makes great pie and Pop will fix your burger just the way you like down to the no onion - extra tomato and mayo! It sad to see that there is an Homogenized Canada too!

Local restaurants are best, individual and with character...they try harder and taste better than that prefab manufactured express line stuff...
