This is a very nostalgic photo for me. When I was little my mother was the caretaker of a lighthouse of the United States Lighthouse Service in this very spot managed by the Coast Guard. The light warns ships of a point of land and it is very important on foggy nights. It is now electrified and a different design, but when she was caretaker it was a light fueled by kerosene. I have one of the globes from my mother's light; a very thick prismed sphere.
If my mother heard a ship blowing its horn in the middle of the night she would worry that the light had gone out. If the ship blew three times or more the whole house would be up worrying. I do not believe that the light ever went out in the time she was caretaker.
I had not seen this place in years and almost fell into the River today trying to get this photo.
