My Louisiana

This gallery is of scenes and people that make up "my Louisiana" as seen through my eyes and my camera's lens. (See also the gallery "Louisiana's Great River Road")
It is the State of my birth. It is the place that the first Perilloux arrived in New Orleans from France in 1740 and it is the state where family, home and heritage are dear in the hearts of its people. My German ancestors arrived about the same time and settled in the Mississippi River region known as the German Coast.

Coleen -- These photographs are outstanding! Many of them are "my" Louisiana, too. It's a delight to see photos by the only current human member of the Louisiana Live Oak Society. My grandfather was Edwin Lewis Stephens, the founder of the LLOS. And as you may know, he was a photographer, too! Coleen, You have a wonderful collection here, full of nostalgia. From mud bugs and sugar cane to the mighty river, from plantation homes to the people who make Louisiana what it is, it is all great to see. My dad's parents migrated to Dallas from Baton Rouge where my grandfather and his daredevel brothers swam in the river as children, swimming into whirlpools and back out before geting sucked down and holding their breath to enter the suction side of the great siphons to get shot up and over the levies and out into the rice paddies. Not surprisingly, one of the brothers drowned in the river as a child. Your images bring back memories of the few trips that I have made to visit family in Baton Rouge and n'orleans. Great work. These, and your other galleries, are among the very best galleries on PBase. The images are wonderful. Ther're not over-saturated post-card types, but beautiful, evocative images that capture the spirit and sense of place that can only be developed over generations. Inspiring!

Coleen, This is beautiful. My family was born and raised in Southoren California but we fell in love with the rich history, people and beauty of Louisiana. At this very moment my husband is driving across state with our moving truck - ready to start our new lives in Southwest Louisiana. My husband is from Germany and he felt right at home there. Thank you for sharing these pictures. We have had the opportunity to see some of these places and can't wait to keep exploring.
