Fushimi Inari

Fushimi Inari is a remarkable shinto shrine near Kyoto, characterized by its hundreds of gates (torii) snaking up the hills. It is located on a beautiful forested mountain, and makes for a great hike. There is a mysterious feeling to this site, and even though it is somewhat outside the main visiting sites of Kyoto, it is a great experience to spend a day there. It was most recently featured in scenes of "Memoirs of a Geisha" (2005).
