Final Resting Place of The Ladies of Llangollen

Llangollen

Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby came to Llangollen in 1778 and moved to Plas Newydd in 1780. Having found themselves in difficult situations. Eleanor was about to be sent to a convent in France and Sarah was fending off the advances of her guardian’s husband, they had decided the only way out of an impossible situation, was to leave their families in Ireland and find a place where they could live in peace. They had been friends for ten years and were to live together for over 50 years. They brought with them Sarah’s maid, Mary Carryl, who remained their faithful friend and housekeeper until she died in 1809. Eleanor died in 1829 and Sarah in 1831. They are all buried together in St Collen’s churchyard, the grave and three sided monument is to the right with iron railings around.
Dinas Bran Castle is on the hill nearly a mile away.

Love the story...so glad they found happiness after sad beginnings and what a picturesque setting for their frp...

A beautiful spot for them to end their days. A nicely composed shot.

Clear and crisp John, I like how the bare tree dominates the scene, well captured....
